Description: Stanley Tigerman designed an entire line of stoneware objects for Swid Powell titled Cities. This line included this hard to find cookie jar, and coffee, tea, sugar and flour jars and candlesticks. All were simply glazed in this same white. This iconic design for Swid Powell rarely surfaces without damage. The stoneware that was used in many of the Swid Powell giftware designs was thin and light and almost every example we have seen of this cookie jar, as well as their tea service for Swid Powell, has some sort of damage. This is because stoneware is fired at a lower temperature than porcelain, making it less durable.
This example bears the ink stamped signature of Tigerman on the bottom as shown, as well as the Made in Japan sticker. Later designs for Swid Powell bore both Tigerman and McCurry’s signatures. An example can be found in the Yale University Art Gallery collection donated by Nan Swid from her personal collection.
