Description: Here is a harder to find larger sized Alfaraz horse with no condition issues. Many of the animals, especially the larger sized ones, have chips, broken limbs and other noticeable and detracting defects. This example is flawless with a great modernist glaze of circles.
Miguel Durán-Loriga was a trained architect and designer who opened Alfaraz Pottery in 1952. The firm is well known for its animal sculptures, lamps and tile works. Most of the animals and figures are of a much smaller size. If you shop around you will find may smaller ones, but examples of this larger size are very hard to find. This horse is signed with the stamped in ink Made in Spain mark as shown. It likely had a foil Alfaraz label that we have seen on other examples, that came off. Although Jesús Martitegui’s name appears on an original hang tag found on other pieces as a co-artist, very little information about him can be found. We have added photos of an original Alfaraz hang tag from another horse we have handled. A terrific modernist design that would enhance any modern home.
